Lightened and grey hair is coarser and more porous than it looks, and it tangles for that reason rather than because it is long.

Toning without conditioning is why purple shampoo has a reputation for leaving hair dry. The pigment is not the problem. Doing the toning step and skipping the moisture step is.

Carefully and meticulously towel-dry freshly shampooed hair to aggressively prevent the highly pigmented conditioner from slipping off the wet shaft.
Apply after cleansing to clean, damp hair, taking small sections to gently work the product through the mid-lengths and ends first.
Comb the product all the way through the hair and leave on for 2–5 minutes to allow the violet pigments to fully engage.
Rinse thoroughly and exhaustively with the coldest water possible to tightly lock the cuticle and seal in the bright, cool tone.
