PROTOCOL
If you've got Type 3 curls (3A through 3C), the Milk_shake Curl Passion line is one of the routines we point to most often. Here's the eight-week protocol — three products, simple cadence, real results to expect at each milestone.
Who this routine is for
Type 3 curl patterns (3A loose loops, 3B springy spirals, 3C tight corkscrews), with one or more of these signals:
- Curls that look defined when wet but lose shape as they dry;
- Day-2 hair that frizzes more than it refreshes;
- A vague feeling that "every product I try is too heavy or too light" — usually meaning the protein-moisture balance is off;
- Recently colour-treated or chemically-relaxed hair where the curl pattern has loosened or weakened.
If your curls fall outside that range — Type 2 waves or Type 4 coils — this routine isn't the right starting point. Take the hair quiz for a routine matched to your specific texture.
The routine — three products, in order
Step 1 — Cleanse: Milk_shake Curl Passion Shampoo
What it does: A cleanser built on an ammonium lauryl sulfate base that lifts product build-up off the scalp.
How to use:
- Wet hair fully — saturated, not damp.
- Apply a 50p-sized amount to the scalp only (not the lengths). Massage with fingertips, not nails, for 60 seconds.
- Let the suds run through the lengths as you rinse — that's enough to clean them.
- Rinse for 30 seconds longer than you think you need to.
- Frequency: 2 to 3 times per week. Curls that wash daily lose definition.
Step 2 — Condition: Milk_shake Curl Passion Conditioner
What it does: A heavier-slip conditioner whose slip comes from behentrimonium chloride, with shea butter in the base, to smooth the cuticle as you comb.
How to use:
- Apply mid-lengths to ends only. Avoid the scalp.
- Comb through with fingers (or a wide-tooth) while your hair is loaded with conditioner — this is when detangling does the least damage.
- Leave on for 3 minutes minimum. 5 if you have time.
- Rinse with cooler water — it helps the cuticle close flat.
Step 3 — Define + protect: Milk_shake Curl Passion Leave-In Conditioner
What it does: Leaves a thin film-former (polyquaternium-22) on the cuticle to lock the curl shape and tame frizz between washes, with amodimethicone to keep the curl soft.
How to use:
- While hair is soaking wet (the wetter, the better — definition collapses on damp hair), pump 2 to 4 sprays into your palms.
- Use the "praying hands" method — hands flat together, slide down the lengths from root to tip. Don't scrunch yet.
- Once distributed, scrunch upwards from the ends. You'll hear a gentle squelch — that's good. It means the gel-cast is forming.
- Air-dry or diffuse on low heat. Don't touch your hair while it's drying.
- Day-2 refresh: 1 to 2 sprays into wet palms, scrunch.

The eight-week timeline — what to expect
Weeks 1 to 2: Adjustment
Your hair may feel different rather than better. The first week, frizz often looks worse for 24 hours after a wash; this is the cuticle re-equilibrating.
Weeks 3 to 4: Definition returns
You'll start seeing the curl pattern hold further into day 2. The "gel cast" from the leave-in conditioner becomes more pronounced — that crunchy feeling when your hair dries. Scrunch out the cast (just squeeze gently) once it's fully dry. Day-3 hair often refreshes with a single spray.
Weeks 5 to 6: Protein-moisture balance settles
This is when clients tell us "I think it's working." Hair feels softer when wet, retains moisture longer between washes, and you're reaching for the leave-in less. If your hair feels too soft (limp, no spring), it's a sign the moisture is slightly outpacing the protein — add a weekly mask or treatment (Milk_shake's treatment line has a protein mask suited for this stage).
Weeks 7 to 8: Established routine
You should be able to maintain the routine without thinking about it. Wash 2 to 3× per week, condition every wash, leave-in every wash plus refreshes mid-week. Your end-of-week-8 photo (we recommend taking one at week 1 and week 8 in the same lighting and pose) should show: clearer curl pattern, less halo of frizz, more day-2 retention, and fewer single straightened strands across the canopy.
Common adjustments at each stage
- If hair feels too dry by week 4: upgrade conditioning. Use a deep mask (e.g. Curl Passion Conditioner with a heat cap for 15 minutes) once a week. Don't reduce washing further than 3× per week — under-washing increases scalp tension and fades curl definition.
- If hair feels too soft / floppy by week 6: protein gap. Add a weekly protein treatment for 2 weeks, then drop back.
- If you've coloured your hair mid-routine: the colour service sets the routine back roughly 2 weeks. Restart from week 4 with a slightly heavier conditioning cadence.
- If you're in a hard-water area (London, the South-East, much of East Anglia): a monthly clarifying wash before the Curl Passion routine helps remove mineral build-up. More on hard water and curls →
- For Type 2 to 4 curls: the Curly Girl Method UK adaptation may be a better starting framework. See our CGM guide →
