Curly Girl Method UK — a beginner's guide for Type 2 to 4 curls

PROTOCOL

The Curly Girl Method (CGM) was designed in 2001 by stylist Lorraine Massey for Type 2 to Type 4 curls and waves. Twenty-plus years on, it's still the closest thing to a universal framework for getting curls to behave. Here's the UK version — adapted for hard-water households, the products that pass the test, and what to expect when you start.

What the Curly Girl Method actually is

CGM is a set of rules — not a brand, not a product line — for treating curly hair the way it actually wants to be treated, rather than the way straight-hair routines treat it. The original version had three core rules; the modern UK-friendly version has five.

  1. No sulphate cleansers. Sulphates (sodium lauryl sulphate, sodium laureth sulphate) strip the natural oils that curls need to clump and define. Replace with sulphate-free cleansers or co-wash conditioners.
  2. No silicones (or only water-soluble ones). Heavy silicones (dimethicone, amodimethicone) coat the hair shaft and prevent moisture from penetrating. Modern formulations use water-soluble silicones (cyclopentasiloxane, dimethicone copolyol) that wash out cleanly with sulphate-free shampoos — these are fine.
  3. No drying alcohols. SD alcohol, denatured alcohol, and isopropyl alcohol pull moisture out. Fatty alcohols (cetyl, stearyl, behenyl) are the opposite — they're conditioning, not drying.
  4. Apply leave-in to soaking-wet hair. Curls form when they're saturated. Drying first and applying second loses most of the definition you could have had.
  5. Plop or diffuse, don't towel-rub. Cotton towels rough the cuticle and create frizz. Microfibre, an old t-shirt, or air-drying with a diffuser on low heat are the friction-free alternatives.

Where the method is most often misapplied

Two patterns that come up again and again:

Over-conditioning. If you read CGM as "more is better," you'll end up with limp, mushy curls that don't hold definition. Curls need protein-moisture balance, not an unlimited moisture supply. The signal: hair feels great when wet, falls flat when dry. The fix: a light protein treatment every 2 to 3 weeks.

Under-cleansing. "No sulphate" doesn't mean "no cleansing." Cocamidopropyl betaine + sodium lauroyl methyl isethionate (the surfactants in modern sulphate-free shampoos) clean perfectly well — they just don't lather as much. If you skip cleansing or co-wash exclusively, sebum and product build up at the scalp and curls lose definition over 4 to 6 weeks.

Hard-water UK households need a tweak

Most CGM guides are written for North American water systems. UK water — particularly in London, the South-East, and East Anglia — runs much harder than typical US water. Mineral build-up on the cuticle defeats the moisture-locking goal of CGM after 3 to 4 weeks.

The UK adaptation: a monthly clarifying wash at the start of every 4-week cycle. We've written more on this in Hard water, soft water, and what your shampoo's actually fighting.

The 4-week starter routine — what we prescribe

Week 0 — Reset

  1. One clarifying wash to remove old build-up and silicone coating. Use a clarifying or chelating shampoo — see our hard-water UK guide for the cadence by water region.
  2. Deep mask after — heat cap or shower cap for 15 minutes — to replenish moisture stripped by the clarifier.
  3. Air-dry, no styling. Just see what your natural curl pattern looks like clean.

Weeks 1 to 2 — Adjust

  1. Wash 2 to 3× per week with a sulphate-free cleanser. Apply to the scalp only. Let suds run through the lengths as you rinse.
  2. Condition every wash. Apply mid-lengths to ends. Detangle with fingers while loaded with conditioner. Rinse with cooler water.
  3. Apply leave-in to soaking-wet hair. Praying-hands method, then scrunch upwards from the ends.
  4. Diffuse on low heat or air-dry. Don't touch your hair while it's drying.
  5. Day 2 onwards: refresh with a light spray of leave-in or water + scrunch.

Expect: hair feels different (fluffier, less coated). Some frizz on day 1 of week 1 — this is normal as the cuticle re-equilibrates after the clarifying.

Weeks 3 to 4 — Settle

By week 3, you should see clearer curl pattern, more defined ends, and longer day-2 hold. If hair feels too soft or limp, add a 5-minute protein treatment in week 4. If hair feels too hard or "crunchy" after drying, scrunch out the cast more vigorously and consider reducing your leave-in by 1 pump.

End of week 4: take a side-by-side photo with your week-0 reset photo. The change in canopy frizz, single-strand straightening, and end definition is usually obvious.

The 8-week protocol

If you want a deeper version of this routine — week-by-week milestones, common adjustments, and what to expect at each stage — we've written it up at length: The Curl Passion routine — three products, eight weeks.

What CGM doesn't fix

  • Cut. CGM works best on a curl-specific cut (RËZO, DevaCut, or similar). Layers cut on dry hair using ribboning or carving techniques. If you're growing out a blunt-cut, the routine helps but the silhouette won't fully click into place until your next salon visit.
  • Severe damage. If your hair has been chemically straightened, bleached, or repeatedly relaxed, the curl pattern may have lost some of its "memory." A bond-repair regimen (we've written one at How to fix damaged hair) precedes CGM until the cuticle is rebuilt.
  • Type 1 hair. Straight hair doesn't benefit from the curl-clumping principles. CGM is over-conditioning for it.
